The Black Moods are amplifying Arizona’s rock legacy by carving a distinct lane through modern rock with a sound that’s raw, melodic, and unapologetically electric. A true power trio — Josh Kennedy (vocals/guitar), Chico Diaz (drums), and Brenden McBride (bass) — the band channels the spirit of classic rock while injecting it with contemporary urgency. Their journey began in the Sonoran Desert and quickly expanded to stages across North America, where they’ve shared bills with artists like ZZ Top, Godsmack, Disturbed, Gin Blossoms, Nothing More, and Collective Soul, proving their sound could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with rock royalty.
Kennedy’s songwriting blends vintage soul with modern edge, drawing early influence from Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, then filtering those roots through the melodic sensibilities of ’90s alternative rock. That fusion became the foundation of The Black Moods’ identity, first introduced on their self-titled 2012 debut produced by Jim Kaufman, and further refined on 2016’s Medicine. Songs like “Say It for the Last Time” and “Someone to Save Us” revealed a deeper emotional range, pairing anthemic hooks with introspective grit.
The band reached a creative high point with 2020’s Sunshine, produced by Grammy-nominated Johnny “K” Karkazis. Recorded in their Tempe studio, the album delivered breakout tracks including “Bella Donna,” “Bad News,” “Whatcha Got,” and the title track, balancing swagger with sincerity during a time of global uncertainty. When touring paused, The Black Moods leaned into reinvention, relocating to the Ozarks to write and record Into the Night (2022). The experience was captured in the documentary 500 Days of Silence and resulted in a record pulsing with urgency and intimacy, highlighted by tracks like “Saturday Night” and “Hollywood.” Along the way, the band also collaborated with Doors legend Robby Krieger on a re-recording of “Roadhouse Blues,” earning a top-five spot on The Doors’ 60 Covers Over 60 Years list.
In 2025, The Black Moods released Passion and officially welcomed McBride into the lineup, marking a renewed sense of purpose and momentum. Known for electrifying live performances, the band delivers shows fueled by fiery guitar work, relentless rhythm, and undeniable chemistry. Whether in clubs or on arena stages, The Black Moods continue to evolve while staying rooted in the raw power that defines them — a band built on connection, catharsis, and the enduring force of rock and roll.
